Discover the Hidden Gems: How to Find Under-the-Radar Senior Communities That Exceed Expectations

Finding the ideal senior community for a loved one is much like discovering a hidden treasure. It demands patience, a keen eye, and understanding what truly matters for a comfortable and fulfilling lifestyle.
When the time came for moving Mom into a memory care community, we were dealing with a lot of emotion and confusion on picking the best community for her. We wanted a place where she would feel as comfortable there as she did in our home. I did some research and mapped out a plan to find that ideal community. Here's what I've learned about uncovering a "gem":

1. Identify Priorities

Each senior has unique needs and preference. Some might prioritize walkability and activities, while others need high levels of care or prefer a quiet setting. If there is diagnosed dementia or Alzheimer's, a community that can address and support that health decline is important.

2. Research Is Key

Scour local resources, talk to friends and me to get insights into the communities. Create a list of your top 5 communities based on needs and do indepth research on them.

3. Visit in Person

Make an appointment with the community and visit. There's nothing like seeing a place firsthand. Observe the atmosphere, the facilities, and talk to residents.

4. Check for Accreditations

Ensure the community has a good standing, check out on-line reviews. Just remember, communities are always being bought out and new management comes in. The community I moved my Mom to did not have good on-line reviews. However, it was taken over by a terrific company and different management. I couldn't be happier with her level of care (and love) she's receiving!

5. Consider the Financials

Understand the costs, what’s included, and if they fit the budget without compromising on necessary amenities.
The end result? A place where loved ones aren't just moving in, but are joining a community that resonated with their spirit and needs.
Now, in the heart of South Central Pennsylvania, I take pride in applying these lessons to assist other families in their search for the perfect senior community.
